Tech giant Apple is rumoured to be expanding the use of eSIM technology on its next iteration of iPhone, the iPhone 15 series. According to a report from the French website iGeneration, Apple is said to be planning an eSIM-only variant for its iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models that will be sold in France, with more European countries expected to follow suit.
The trend started with the launch of the iPhone 14 series last year, which only offered eSIM connectivity for the US market and retained the physical SIM card slot for other markets. The addition of eSIM alongside the physical SIM card slot allowed for dual SIM connectivity on the iPhone.
eSIM technology has been available on iPhones since 2018’s iPhone Xs series and the iPhone XR. However, technical challenges have prevented most consumers from using it in real-world situations.
On the iPhone 14, customers can configure up to eight eSIM profiles, eliminating the need to constantly swap connections for those who travel between countries frequently.
Apple is expected to launch its next iteration of iPhones in September this year but has not shared any details about the upcoming iPhone 15 series yet. A recent report suggested that Apple would offer the Dynamic Island feature that debuted on iPhone 14 Pro models on all four models of its upcoming release.
With more countries expected to adopt eSIM technology on iPhones, consumers can expect enhanced flexibility when switching between carriers or travelling internationally without having to worry about swapping physical SIM cards.
