CD Projekt Red has announced that an expansion is coming to Cyberpunk 2077 called Phantom Liberty. While the details of the upcoming expansion have been kept under wraps, CD Projekt Red has released some information about it, including the release date, platforms it will be available on, and some changes to the gameplay. Here’s what we know about Phantom Liberty so far.
Release Date
CD Projekt Red is aiming to release Phantom Liberty in 2023, although a specific date has not been announced as of yet. CD Projekt Red also confirmed that its marketing campaign for the expansion will kick off in June, so fans can expect more information soon. The reveal date is likely to be confirmed via either a Summer Games Fest announcement or a new episode of the Night City livestream hosted by CD Projekt Red.
Platforms
Unfortunately, last-gen fans will miss out on the new expansion. Phantom Liberty will only be available on the PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. CDPR confirmed that support for the last-gen consoles has been phased out, and they are focusing on the current-gen systems as they overhaul some gameplay elements for the expansion.
New Characters
Solomon Reed
One of the new characters that players will interact with in Phantom Liberty is Solomon Reed, an FIA Agent for the NUSA. He’s played by Idris Elba, but it’s important to note that Solomon Reed isn’t literally the actor.
Johnny Silverhand
Keanu Reeves returns as the voice and likeness of Johnny Silverhand. He offers his unique take on the world of Night City as players embark on a high-risk espionage mission on behalf of the New United States of America government.
Gameplay Changes and Updates
CDPR has described Phantom Liberty as a spy-thriller, and a complete overhaul to the cop system and vehicle-to-vehicle combat are some of the confirmed changes coming to Cyberpunk 2077 once the expansion goes live. Gabriel Amatangelo, game director for CD Projekt Red, has also confirmed that players will be tasked with accepting a high-risk espionage mission on behalf of the New United States of America government.
Pricing
Phantom Liberty will be a paid expansion, similar to how The Witcher 3 expanded on its game world with two major expansions. Pricing details have not been revealed as of yet, but CDPR’s global PR director Radek Grabowski confirmed that the expansion “will be a paid one.” He also mentioned that “our expansions are traditionally cheaper than full-price games,” suggesting that Phantom Liberty may lean towards the pricing of the larger Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3, which cost $20 upon release.
What’s Next for Cyberpunk 2077?
Cyberpunk 2077 is still receiving plenty of attention from its developers, with a massive expansion coming in 2023. Meanwhile, a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is also in development, led by Cyberpunk 2077 quest director Pawel Sasko. This group consists of several members of the “core” Cyberpunk 2077 team and is based in Boston. Sasko confirmed on Twitter that they’re focusing primarily on the new Cyberpunk 2077 project, codenamed Orion, after the release of Phantom Liberty.
